Anthony Eyton

6 - 29 November 2019

Browse and Darby are delighted to announce a solo show of Anthony Eyton.

Eyton is one of the most respected Senior Royal Academicians living and working today, and this exhibition consists entirely of new paintings.

The artist’s distinctive gestural style, evolved and developed over decades, is full of passion and expression, undiminished, perhaps even strengthened, by his impressive 96 years of age.

The central subject is his home and studio in Brixton, London, and at the heart of the exhibition is a series of paintings of chairs, alone and in groups, placed (or found) in various configurations around his light-filled studio. Suggestive of both presence and absence, their nuanced positioning lends them an almost anthropomorphic quality.

Also on display are landscapes, from London landmarks to Ipanema beach and the grotto at Lourdes, which testify to his range and his continued interest in how people inhabit places and spaces.
