Armand Guillaumin was born in Paris in 1841, where he grew up and in 1861 enrolled at the Académie Suisse.
He subsequently met two fellow students; Paul Cezanne and Camille Pissarro who would remain lifelong friends. Guillaumin took part in a number of exhibitions in Paris, including the Salon des Refusés in 1863 and six of the eight Impressionist exhibitions held between 1974 and 1886. He is best known for his French landscapes and his intense use of colour. Guillaumin also became leader of the École de Crozant a diverse school of artists who painted the landscape around the village of Crozant in the Creuse department of France. Armand Guillaumin died in 1927.
