Tete d'enfant (Pierre Matisse), 1904-05
One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Henri Matisse, among others, altered the course of modern art. Throughout his career he explored the mediums of painting, drawings, sculpture, and printmaking and his subjects encompassed still life, portraiture, landscape and the female figure.
Matisse experimented with sculpture from his early years and frequently used it to solve problems with painted compositions, or to inspire his paintings. The majority of Matisse's sculptures were completed between 1900 and 1910.
