Born in New York City in 1982, Timothy Betjeman moved to London in 2006. He studied Visual Art and Philosophy at the University of Chicago (BA) before undertaking a post-graduate diploma in Drawing at the Royal Drawing School in London. In 2018, Betjeman moved to Japan to study at Tokyo University of the Arts, graduating with an MA in Japanese Painting. He is currently a PhD candidate at Tama Art University in Tokyo.

Well aware of Japan's renowned history in the creative arts, Betjeman's own practice has been steadily impacted by his exposure to Japanese culture over the last five years. Taking a conscious decision to inject new influences into his working practice through his move to Japan, Betjeman has taken elements of Nihonga (a traditional Japanese style of painting using mineral pigments and ink) and Manga (Japanese graphic novels) to create a idiosyncratic style expressing both his Western roots, and Japanese influences.
