A painter of landscapes, portrait and mural decorations, Spencer studied at Camberwell School, the Royal Academy of Art (1911-12) and under Frederick Brown ad Henry Tonks at the Slade School of Fine Art (1913-16 and 1919-20). His first solo exhibition was held at the Goupil Gallery in 1923. He served as an Official War Artist during the Second World War. Spencer was elected a Royal Academician in 190. He was the younger brother of the painter Sir Stanley Spencer.
