Born in Bromley, Kent, in 1925, Symons begun his artistic education under the tutelage of the sculptor Elizabeth Muntz at Bryanston School. During the Second World War he served in the Navy, but when he was demobbed he went to Camberwell School of Arts. At Camberwell he was taught by John Dodgson and the Euston Road painters, and begun a lifelong obsession with the mathematics and geometry of classical composition, copying and analysing the Baptism of Piero della Francesca.
