Henri Gaudier-Brzeska
Biography 1891 Born October 4th St Jean de Braye, nr Orleans, France. Father village carpenter.
1897 Started schooling at village school.
1903 Won Scholarship to Benjamin Franklin Secondary School, Orleans.
1906 Won a bursary to visit London for two months
1907 Won Scholarship to study commerce and language at Merchant Venturers College, Bristol, followed by German Business studies, Nuremburg. August arrived in England. Lives with Smith family in Bristol. Daughter Kitty Smith becomes a lifelong friend.
1908 October moves to Cardiff to begin second part of English Scholarship. Employed at Fifoot and Ching, coal exporters and importers for practical commercial experience.
1909 April travels to Germany for German Business studies Scholarship. Lives with Dr. Uhlemayer and famiy in Nuremburg. September goes to Paris, works for translating company, Armand Colin, editeur.
1910 January meets Sophie Brzeska when studying in the St Genevieve Library. End of December leaves Paris for London with Sophie.1912 February meets Haldane MacFall, and through him Lovat Fraser, Enid Bagnold and Major Smythies. June visits Jacob Epstein in his studio, makes his first stone carving.1913 January meets Horace Brodzky. July exhibits at Allied Artist’s Association London salon at the Albert Hall: six sculptures and a portfolio of drawings. Meets Ezra Pound, Brancusi and Nina Hamnett at the exhibition. Leaves Wulfsberg’s to devote himself ‘entirely to my art’. October exhibits at International Society of Sculptures, Painters and Gravers. Autumn Exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery and at the Royal West of England Academy. November rents railway arch studio, 25 Winthorpe road, Putney. Meets Roger Fry who commissions work for Omega Workshop.1914 January exhibits with the Grafton Group, Alpine Gallery: five sculptures and drawings. February exhibits London Group exhibition, Goupil Gallery: five sculptures. Elected a member of the London Group. Rebel Art Centre established by Wyndham Lewis, becomes active in it. April invited to contribute an article to ‘Blast’. May exhibits Twentieth Century Art, Whitechapel Art Gallery: six sculptures and a portfolio of drawings. Elected Chairman of the Allied Artist’s Association. June exhibits London Salon Exhibition, Albert Hall. August goes to Boulogne to enlist but is imprisoned in Calais for not having done military service; escapes. September leaves London a second time for France to enlist in French army having secured ‘safe conduct’.1915 March work exhibited in London Group Exhibition, Goupil Gallery. Promoted to Sergeant. June work exhibited Vorticist Exhibition, Dore Gallery. June 5th killed in action Neuville St Vaast.1918 Memorial Exhibition, Leicester Galleries, London arranged by Sophie Brzeska and Ezra Pound.
