Susan Wilson

Born in New Zealand, Susan Wilson began by painting the sea and the mountains where she grew up, in the South Island. She spent her time as a young woman hitchhiking around Spain, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, working for a time as a nurse, before moving to London, where she studied at Camberwell School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. She was made a Fellow of Cheltenham & Gloucester College and has been awarded the Richard Ford Award to Madrid and The Prado, an Italian Government Scholarship to Venice and the Veneto and the British School at Rome Abbey Award. In 2000 she painted a series of works illustrating Katherine Mansfield’s Short Stories for the FOLIO Society, which then toured around New Zealand, as well as being exhibited at Browse & Darby.

As well as painting, Wilson is a tutor at the Royal Drawing School, artist interpreter at the National Portrait Gallery and an ARTES committee member.

Her painting style is vivid and full of verve, with intense brushstrokes and a deft, bold use of colour. Her subject matter ranges from landscapes and still lifes to portraits.
